1. Identify the question(s) or inquiry that guided your sustained investigation.
The question I identify in my inquiry is ?how do candles parallel various stages in life?? Light and heat all emanate different meanings, all depending on one?s interpretation. Heat, coming from a candle, can determine how long a candle lasts: the brighter one shines, the quicker one burns. But if our goal will eventually come to an end, is it worth putting the effort into our daily activities? How do children view the world as compared to an adult? How should we live our life to make the most of it?
2. Describe how your sustained investigation shows evidence of practice, experimentation, and revision guided by your question(s) or inquiry.
Image 1, 2 represent beginnings, as a clock and candle display the start of something new. Image 3 zooms out into various stages of life through candles. Image 4 reviews the connection between various stages of candles and time sensitivity. Image 5 and 6 delve into deeper waters, questioning one's identity when time runs out. Images 7, 8, 9 look into the mind of a child, specifically, the naivety through bright colors. Images 10, 11 adds the element of growth through how a child's mind develops as they get older. Images 12, 13, 14 walk you through a person's life to create the whole Image 15.

" This experiments the inevitable ending—the point where we all have to die. In the end we will have to say goodbye to those we care about, even if we don't want to. Due to the little amount of time we have, we may unintentionally leave people whom we love behind. "
--- The sketch investigates a crowd hovering over a hospital bed, and the crowd fades as it gets bigger. Standing on the opposite side is a person who is looking towards the crowd. The idea is that the person on the right is helpless, and has no choice but to say goodbye to the ones they love. Their time is over, and they have to leave behind people they care about. (I may add chains to the person on right to emphasise helplessness.... just a rough idea! May add more sketches) |
MEMENTO MORI SKETCHESHow does a proper Christian view of the material world embrace or reject death (or both)?
Obviously, death is an inevitable subject. It happens to everyone eventually so we may as well embrace it, but not fully. It is possible to reject death, but it is not helpful. Because of Jesus' sacrifice, we will not have to suffer the painful death, and instead allow to be with him in heaven. How does a Christian view of afterlife, and the present Spiritual life, have an impact on how we create art (output) while we are physically alive on earth? We are called to embrace the concept of death, and this gives inspiration to put the best work and effort into art. The concept of mortality and "what happens after death" will allow to inspire an artist to flourish in how and why their art matters. It is a good output to vent and release frustrations on, especially since no one truly knows what happens after one passes away. How does a Christian view of life and afterlife impact how we use, enter into, or consume art (input) ? The Christian view allows us to appreciate life more, knowing at the end it may disappear. There may be more opportunities to appreciate simple things in life, and that may include art. The ability to appreciate life because of how short time is strengthens through the idea of an afterlife, as no one knows when they may pass. The mystery can spark optimism, allowing us to consume more art whether it be sorrowful or positive. |
